Older job listings still drive interviews

· 5 min read · By Tal Flanchraych, Founder of ApplyAll

What 130,684 applications tell us about when to apply.

You find a job that looks like a perfect fit. Then you notice… the listing is two days old already. If you've been told to apply within the first 24 hours or not at all, you might wonder if it's already too late. Job postings don't exactly age like a fine wine, after all (however much I wish it were otherwise. Or maybe I just like wine too much. But I digress).

So, how late is too late to apply? Us data nerds at ApplyAll have sent over 3 million job applications since 2023, and have all the data we need to help you answer this exact question.

Across a sample of 130,684 ApplyAll job applications sent between May and August 2026 in the US and Canada, applications to job postings less than 12 hours old had the highest interview rate, which surprised exactly 0 people. But, what did surprise every single one of us on the ApplyAll team is just how frequently older job postings are still driving interviews. 30 days is basically prehistoric in the job search world, and yet, the data shows that a real fraction of these roles are still open and considering new candidates!?

Bar chart of interview-request rates by job listing age. Under 12 hours is 1.70 percent, 1–2 days is 1.60 percent, and 2–3 days is 1.54 percent. Later ages range from 0.75 to 1.20 percent.
Interview-request rates by listing age across 130,684 ApplyAll applications. Listings under 12 hours: 1.70%. Listings one to three days old still beat the 1.12% average.

The first 24 hours are not your only window

As you'd expect, applying to job listings under 12 hours old has the highest observed interview rate: 1.7%. That works out to about 17 interview requests per 1,000 applications, compared with roughly 11 per 1,000 on average.

But when applying to older job postings, the interview rate declines more slowly than you'd think:

  • Listings aged 1–2 days: 1.60%
  • Listings aged 2–3 days: 1.54%

The useful point is that the first day is NOT an expiration date. A promising role that's been listed for a few days still deserves your attention, especially if it's a perfect fit.

After the first few days, the interview rate plateaus at 1%

3–5 day old listings have an interview rate of about 1.20%, but shockingly, interview rates stop declining and effectively plateau for jobs that are anywhere from 5–60 days old, even though it's a huge range. Whether a job is 1 week old or 7 weeks old, the interview rate hovers at about 1%.

At the oldest end, listings that were at least 120 days old had a lower interview-request rate: 0.75%. That's about eight requests per 1,000 applications, but still, not as bad as you'd think!

What this means for your search

Our takeaway: prioritize fresh jobs that fit your background, but don't rule out older jobs if your background is a perfect fit either.

Is all this more than you want to think about? ApplyAll takes care of the details for you so you can focus less on optimizing every detail of your job search and more on, well... literally anything else.

Data sources and definitions

A few important notes about the data, because I know you people are smart and will ask:

  1. These are all jobs posted on employers' official careers pages, which is how we source our roles and also how we apply to them. This means our data does NOT consider or track if or when those jobs were also posted or reposted on LinkedIn, or the response rate from things like LinkedIn Easy Apply, which we don't support.
  2. We define an "interview" as a request to schedule a live phone or video call with a real human who works for that company. Async and AI interviews and assessments are not counted.

Methodology

This article uses ApplyAll's historical September 15, 2026 analysis of applications submitted May 1–August 15. The broader extract contained 158,870 submitted applications; 144,121 had computable fit data, and 130,684 also had usable listing-age data. Outcomes had at least 30 days to arrive, with longer observation periods for earlier applications. These are not uniform 30-day rates.

"Interview request" means a recorded interview-request event linked to an application in ApplyAll. It does not mean an attended interview or a hire, and we can't establish from the table that every request was captured. Listing age uses the most recent posting timestamp in our records, which can reflect reposts or updates and may differ from an employer's original posting date. Historical timestamp fidelity needs confirmation before making stronger claims about exact timing.

The chart shows raw rates, with 95% confidence intervals calculated by resampling customers. The approximately 1.12% average was reconstructed from rounded bucket rates. The first-12-hours raw rate was 1.52 times that average. A separate comparison against each eligible customer's own interview rate also found an early association, with an estimate of 1.69 times the normalized baseline. That comparison includes customers with at least 40 usable-age applications and at least one recorded interview request; it has a different denominator, and its uncertainty is not shown on this chart.

These are observations of ApplyAll's selected and submitted applications, not a randomized experiment or a representative sample of the entire job market. Differences in fit, employers, selection, dates, and outcome recording may contribute. The table does not establish that timing caused the differences, that the first three days are equivalent, or that a precise cutoff exists.

ApplyAll is a commercial job-application service. These figures and the chart reproduce our historical analysis summary; this editorial preparation has not independently rerun the underlying data.
